The democrats and republicans were having a hard time coming to a conclusion. Obama along with most democrats believe in raising the taxes for the wealthy, but not for the middle class. This was one of the plans to cut spending. Democrats seem to have had a more positive view on the outcome of the situation, while republicans seem to have had a more negative one. Republicans want to cut federal spending.
Some things that helped me find my information was using better words, more precise words. Using the words, "democratic and republican opinions." Also using the "~" symbol. I also tried making it simple by typing in "2012 fiscal cliff." I found the most information when i searched, "fiscal cliff 2012 and republican and democrats positions."

Nice, though raising taxes is not the same as cutting spending, as you imply.
